Thomas Trad

My designs combine traditional Japanese aesthetics and Art Deco, which allows me to create modern yet sophisticated and timeless pieces, created with a contrast between materials, textures and patterns.

Thomas graduated from the Product Design course at London’s Central Saint Martins and worked at the studios of Fredrikson Stallard and Michael Anastassiades before returning to Beirut in 2016 to launch his own practice. He spent time in Japan learning traditional carpentry and lacquer techniques, and is currently based in Dubai.

Thomas’s designs feature organic and often abstract forms that lend them a poetic sensibility. He applies unusual techniques to natural materials including marble, wood and rattan, transforming them into objects with surprising shapes or textures. Thomas enjoys visiting factories and workshops to learn how he can harness various techniques to achieve innovative and unusual results informed by his passion for the elegance of Art Deco style. Each finished piece displays evidence of the maker’s hand and how it was created.
