Laura Ramírez
“As the forms develop, I refine the surfaces to bring a sense of clarity and elegance, while leaving subtle traces of the making visible.”
Born in Madrid, Ramírez spent eleven years in Australia and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Sydney's National Art School in 2022. She returned to Madrid in 2023 and established an independent studio practice there. Her experience of living between places informs her interest in belonging and connection. The National Art School awarded her the Matilda Kubany-Deane Memorial Prize in 2022.
Ramírez builds her sculptures by hand, using coiling and successive stages of refinement. She develops layered, lamellar forms that refer to patterns within living systems rather than illustrating them literally. Repetition gives the Organelle pieces their ridged structure, while unglazed surfaces leave the clay's tone and texture exposed. Fine marks of making remain visible, recording the gradual process behind each work.
