Furniture maker Jan Waterston explores the juncture between art, craft and design via the belief that furniture disrupts architectural space.

Jan Waterston

I believe that furniture is the tangible part of a space, providing individuals with the opportunity to form a meaningful connection to their surroundings. It is the uncertain poise of my furniture that holds space and invites people in.

Jan attended the prestigious Rycotewood Furniture School where he obtained first-class honours in Furniture Design and Fine Craft. Upon graduating, he was a resident at The Sylva Wood Foundation.

Timber is the essential element in all of Jan’s work. Compelled to do justice to the material, his pieces demand a thorough study of wood and a deep understanding of its unique qualities. Jan employs a sensitive, instinctive approach to each piece, creating sculptural forms with a graphic quality. Unusual and intriguing details only achievable using traditional woodworking techniques add personality to the furniture, which at the same time retains a sense of familiarity through its conventional forms and functions.
