Yasemin Toygar
I am inspired by the harmony of contrasts - softness and rigidity, abstract and material, lightness and heaviness - I am trying to reflect that in my designs through the use of contrasting colours, forms and materials, which all work harmoniously together.
Born into a creative family in Istanbul, Yasemin's interest in design began early on. Always fascinated by the human body and its sensory relations to the built environment, she went to London to study Architecture. After graduating, she set up her studio where she continues her search for sensory meaning in everyday objects.
Each Yasemin Toygar piece is hand-crafted by local makers in a small atelier in Istanbul. Yasemin takes an experimental approach to her design work, using an array of contrasting colours, textures and structures including materials such as marble, onyx, brass and velvet. All of the studio's marble and onyx pieces are hand-carved by skilled artisans from large blocks of marble into small geometric shapes with machine-like precision, and brass elements are welded by experienced craftsmen who carefully apply the correct amount of heat to achieve a flawless finish.
