Tania Whalen
I accentuate the raw beauty of clay and its form by using mark making techniques to infuse movement and texture, reminiscent of water, wind, and sand. Working alone with music enhances the rhythm and emotion of my slow and meditative creative process.
Whalen has a degree in Fine Arts, but she is mostly self-taught, constantly upskilling and improving her craft through workshops and dedicated practice. Her work has been exhibited at group shows such as '1000 Vases' in Paris, 'On the Table' at Gasworks NYC, and at Power House Arts Brooklyn as part of BCAT- Brooklyn Clay Arts Tour.
The organic forms and textured surfaces of Whalen's pieces are often inspired by nature, architecture, art, and music. Making mental notes on intriguing everyday objects with interesting silhouettes, she captures them in clay, blending a modern sensibility while honouring the medium's identity. Her ceramic pieces are handmade using the pinch and coil techniques, resulting in irregular pieces with surface texture. Rarely glazing the outside, Whalen employs brushes to create movement, patterns, or enhance the shape and curves, playing with how light falls on each piece.
