Master leatherworker Candice Lau’s sculptural work is born out of the amalgamation of two contrasting materials: leather and clay. Informed by her background as a leatherworker, her sculptural clay artworks are woven and pulled to create unique and surprising forms.

Having explored the possibilities of leather over the past ten years, I dove headfirst into a more artistically driven practice by bringing clay into the mix. The outcomes are sculptural forms that are unexpected, alien-like and challenge our expectations of what we can do with clay and leather.

Candice completed her Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of Technology in Sydney. She mastered leatherwork techniques in London and Florence before beginning to experiment with ceramics in 2021. Her work has been recognised with awards and grants from the Arts Council and the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust.

The seemingly disparate properties of leather and clay are skilfully unified in Candice’s unusual objects and products. Her sculptures celebrate the essence of these materials, as well as the craft processes she uses to intuitively manipulate them into new shapes. Candice’s work involves weaving and pulling clay as if it was leather, and treating leather as if it was a material with fluid characteristics. The contrast between the precision leather-working techniques she has mastered and the unpredictability of clay gives each piece a vibrancy and a character that cannot be completely controlled.
