Rhizome
Our endeavor is to explore what quintessentially Indian contemporary design is. We create limited-edition future-heirlooms at the intersection of artisanal luxury and sustainability.
Founded in 2009 by designer and academic Rebecca Reubens, Rhizome emerged as both a response and a provocation, challenging conventional ideas of sustainability in design. Informed by Rebecca’s work across Asia, Africa, and Europe and her PhD at Delft University of Technology, the studio embraces sustainability as ecological, cultural, and social. Each piece is created with traditional and contemporary artisans, combining indigenous materials and innovative processes to craft objects with a strong sense of place and purpose.
Rhizome's pieces argue that contemporary Indian design must find its own voice, and must be informed by its traditions and crafts. Rhizome believes that culture must be dynamic to remain relevant, and not only be relegated to museums with 'do-not-touch' signs. Each Rhizome piece, therefore, is an offering towards the articulation of contemporary Indian design aesthetic and philosophy and dynamic heritage. In a sea of products without authenticity and narrative, Rhizome offers pieces with character that tell the stories of the maker, the material and the process. Each limited-edition piece reimagines the local, the nostalgic and the artisanal for a modern, conscious world overwhelmed with mass-produced cookie-cutter pieces of furniture.
