Artist Purdey Fitzherbert layers materials to capture the unseen. Creating wall art from rust, inks, dyes and demolition paper, she can reveal tree branches and river deltas in a single mark.

The process of creation is paramount and the innate beauty of traditional craft techniques enable this to come to the fore.

Following foundational studies at Wimbledon College of Art, Purdey was awarded first class honours in Fine Art from Newcastle University, where she also worked with senior Psychology lecturer Dr Gabriele Jordan exploring colour theory.

Inspired by travel and adversity, Purdey's creative process draws upon meditative practices, including stone balancing. In these delicate arrangements, she hones her concentration, patience and deep stillness of the mind. The act of stacking allows her to envision larger works based on fleeting moments. In her mixed-media artworks she layers hand-ground pigments, oil paint, metallic pigment and spray paint, trusting the natural reactions to guide the composition and reveal her artistic vision.
