Hannah Simpson Studio
My work explores the interplay between order and chaos, transporting viewers to a realm of surreal objects. Nature, people, and emotions serve as constant inspiration, enabling me to create quirky and playful pieces while pushing the creative possibilities of design.
Established in June 2020, Hannah Simpson Studio emerged from Hannah's passion for ceramics, fuelled by her mother's gift of a second-hand kiln during the COVID-19 lockdown. A graduate of Loughborough University, she discovered her passion for functional art through an internship with designer Nacho Carbonell.
Hannah's table lamps blur the boundaries between fine art and functional design. Her creative process involves sketching around 20 drawings and transforming the best design into clay using hand-building and slip-casting techniques. After firing the clay at 1000 degrees Celsius, she decides whether to preserve its natural qualities or enhance it with hand-painted patterns, glaze layers, and higher temperature refiring. Finally, Hannah enjoys the challenge of achieving the perfect shape and size for each lampshade, which she elegantly finishes with raffia or silk.
