Arjun Rathi Design
Working with glass, akin to shaping clay ceramics on a horizontal axis, I navigate the material's molten state, unable to physically touch it due to the working temperature. Drawing inspiration from rural India and its vibrant culture, I craft modern objects that embody its essence, powered by hands-on experimentation with materials and designs.
Arjun obtained a degree in architecture from KRVIA College, Mumbai, in 2010 and established a dynamic multi-disciplinary studio renowned for its expertise in architecture and lighting design. In 2021, he founded the Mumbai-based Rural Modern Glass Studio specialising in glass blowing and other production techniques.
Employing age-old glass blowing techniques, the studio explores a variety of styles, initially starting with imported glass and now adeptly hand blowing and crafting bespoke light objects. With the beauty of glass taking centre stage, the products seamlessly integrate diverse production processes, artfully combining handmade Indian crafts like Channapatna and Bidri sourced from various regions of India with industrially-produced components. Arjun prioritises sustainability, uplifting and supporting craft and artisan communities while actively minimising the carbon footprint.
